Fundamental Frequency and Other Prosodic Cues to Topic Structure
نویسنده
چکیده
Studies of the relationship between prosody and the topic structure of longer discourses have tended to focus on intonational cues, most specifically fundamental frequency (F0). However, this may limit the kinds of topic structure it is possible to identify. A case study of two speakers shows that including speech rate along with F0 factors in an analysis of the prosody of topic structure can be valuable in shaping our understanding of the topic structure of spoken discourses. Furthermore, it demonstrates that F0 cues can alternate not only with each other, but also with other prosodic cues, to effectively signal topic structure in discourse.

Production of English Lexical Stress by Persian EFL Learners
This study examines the phonetic properties of lexical stress in English produced by Persian speakers learning English as a foreign language. The four most reliable phonetic correlates of English lexical stress, namely fundamental frequency, duration, intensity, and vowel quality were measured across Persian speakers’ production of the stressed and unstressed syllables of five English disyllabi...

متن کاملAperiodicity at Topic Structure Boundaries - Zellers & Post SP10 revised
Topic structure in longer discourses has been shown to be marked in speech by prosodic variations, e.g. variations in fundamental frequency (F0) and speech rate. We investigated whether variations in voice quality, specifically aperiodicity as an aspect of glottalization, were also signals to topic structure by varying to indicate the strength of discourse boundaries. We found that variation in...
متن کاملA multilingual study on intensity as a cue for marking prosodic boundaries
Speech intensity is one of the main prosodic cues, playing a role in most of the suprasegmental phenomena. Despite this, its contribution to the signalling of prosodic hierarchy is still relatively understudied, compared to the other cues, like duration or fundamental frequency. We present here an investigation on the role of intensity in prosodic boundary detection in four different languages,...
متن کاملModelling the Interplay of Multiple Cues in Prosodic Focus Marking
Focus marking is an important function of prosody in many languages. While many phonological accounts concentrate on fundamental frequency (F0), studies have established several additional cues to information structure. However, the relationship between these cues is rarely investigated. We simultaneously analyzed five prosodic cues to focus—F0 range, word duration, intensity, voice quality, th...
